5 Tips To Help You Be A Better Copywriter - Writer's Life.org

Being a good Copywriter can be a tough job at times. You want to succeed in the business, but at the same time sometimes you will no doubt find yourself writing about topics that don’t interest you at all. From ‘the 5 best ways to install your roof’ to ‘how insurance works’ it’s not surprising that at times you can find yourself feeling pretty uninspired.

Every Copywriter has to take jobs that don’t fill them  with great joy. But work is work and it is all about building up a great portfolio and earning a living at the same time of course!

If you find it tough to motivate yourself to write about the more mundane topics, here are 5 great tips to help you get your head down and make sure you keep on writing.

1. Try to find an unusual point of view to write from

There are a million articles out there on ‘how to build your own kitchen’ and, if doing so isn’t something that thrills you, you need to find a new way to get interested in the subject.

Besides, finding an angle that is refreshing and interesting is more likely to ensure that your content stands out. Look at what has ben written before and find a way to make your article more engaging, more informative, and more useful and readable for your audience.

Challenging yourself in this way will help you find the topic more interesting, and gain satisfaction when your article get’s noticed. Even if the topic isn’t exciting, try to think of it as learning something new. If you are going to write an article on different types of fridges, why not make it the best darn article on different types of fridges that world has ever seen?!

2. Give yourself a break

There are some articles which flow easily as you sit down to write them, and then there are those that don’t.

What you thought might be an easy job gets more and more complicated, you find yourself spending way too much time on it, and with that your frustration increases. You’ve got to get it done so go easy on yourself and take regular breaks.

Clean the house, grab a cup of coffee or go for a walk - whatever works for you. Sometimes just getting away from it can help you sit down with fresh eyes and a clear mind, and you’ll suddenly find you are getting through it in no time at all.

3. Don’t put it off

If you know you’ve got a ‘boring’ article to write, just get on with it! Often the most torturous part is thinking about it, fretting about it, worrying that you won’t be able to do it.

If you just sit down and start writing it may not be as bad as you think!

4. Switch it up

If you are really struggling with a piece then do it in stages (deadlines permitting of course!).

Work on it for an hour and then put it to one side to work on something that really excites you. This will help keep you motivated and remember why you actually love your job!

5. Be creative

Often copywriters are creative people that write articles to make their bread and butter. If you are a creative person then make sure you leave time to write your stories, novel, autobiography - whatever it is you are working on at the time.

Keeping time aside to follow your passion will help you to be more motivated to return to your day job and succeed at that too.

Copywriting is a fascinating job, it can lead us to unexpected places, and allows us to learn about new things all the time - even if some of them are a little dull!

Always try to remember that whatever you are writing about, seeing your name in print, and knowing your work is being read by others, that they are enjoying it, or finding it useful, is a mighty and rewarding feeling.

So next time you are feeling a little lethargic, try to remember this, and hopefully you will suddenly be inspired to get back to work!
