How To Have Fun With Your Writing

Hello Writers!

by: Writerslife | Writing

So often we talk about how tough writing is, how much of an effort you have to make, or how you’ll no doubt sabotage yourself by being overly critical or fearful of rejection. We also love to point out how you will undoubtedly get rejected and somehow have to pick your broken soul off the floor and carry on regardless if you even want to have the teeniest tiniest chance of achieving your writing goals.

However, sometimes it’s nice to try and focus on the positives, and remember that writing can be quite fun too! So how can you make sure you don’t fall into a pit of doom and despair and have more fun with your writing?

Here are some helpful tips:

Have a good work/ life balance

It’s important to be passionate about your writing, and, if you want to be successful, there is no denying that you need to be dedicated to it too. However, writing doesn’t and shouldn’t be the only thing going on in your life. If you let it take over, you could end up resenting it because of all the things you are missing out on. So make sure you spend time with your family and friends and reserve time to have other interests and hobbies too.

Write about things you love

Writing about things that are boring or difficult can make it seem like far more of a challenge and a chore than a pleasure. Wherever possible, try to write about things you are passionate about and care about and things you are genuinely interested in. This way the words are more likely to flow, and you’ll take genuine satisfaction in what you are doing.

Don’t force yourself to write

We know it is important to stick to a good writing routine, but that doesn’t mean you have to be completely rigid and inflexible. We all have days where we aren’t feeling very creative, or we just want to put on our old sweatpants and watch boxsets all day, and that’s fine. Forcing yourself to write when you really don’t want to could train your brain to view writing as an unpleasant task and the more you reinforce this, the harder it will be to get motivated again.

Try different things

Remember writing is creative and imaginative and exciting. Don’t worry so much about writing something amazing, instead have fun with your writing by trying new techniques, pushing boundaries and experimenting. You might end up discovering a new way of writing that inspires you!

Send things off, and self publish

Writers like to feel that they are achieving something, so don’t sit around and wait for too long to send something off and try and get it published. Just go for it. Life is too short to worry, to be fearful of ‘what ifs,’ so send your work to agents and publishers, and if you don’t have any takers, then self-publish it, at least it’s out there, and you never know what could happen!

Get writing buddies

Writing can be a lonely task, and sometimes the solitary nature of the job can leave writers feeling somewhat deflated. So why not team up with some fellow writers who you can talk to, bounce ideas off, learn from, and celebrate your achievements with? They’ll keep your spirits up and make your writing day much more enjoyable.

So there you have it, next time you start feeling like writing is a chore, or that you’ll never get anywhere with it, try the above and see if you can make writing fun again!
